Subaru’s All-New Getaway Three Row SUV Pours On the Electric Power

Subaru has (predictably) revealed its version of the all-electric 2027 Toyota Highlander. After all, the two automakers’ electric SUVs are fundamentally identical. The Toyota bZ is like the Subaru Solterra, the Toyota bZ Woodland and Subaru Trailseeker share a wagonlike shape, and the Toyota C-HR and Subaru Uncharted are their brands’ gas-free entry points.

That Subaru now has its own version of the Highlander is no surprise. What’s unexpected is how the new three-row 2027 Subaru Getaway differentiates itself: with power.

Really the Same?

Similarities between the Getaway and Highlander are easy to see. Most body panels are shared, down to the funky fin detail on each front door. Differentiation comes down to the front and rear ends. Instead of the Highlander’s headlight bar, the Getaway gets six-LED accent lights, a Subaru EV signature. These illuminate to show charge status when the vehicle is plugged in. Around back, the Highlander has a taillight bar and triangular reversing lights, while the Getaway’s lenses are split by a “Subaru” wordmark and have rectangular reversing lights lower down.

The Subaru offers unique green and purple paints. Its wheels max out at 20 inches, while the Highlander offers 22-inchers. The roof rails on the Getaway also have a higher load rating than the Highlander, a nod to Subaru drivers’ outdoorsy inclinations.

Inside, the Subaru copies the Toyota almost completely. Both vehicles can seat six or seven occupants depending on whether second-row captain’s chairs are equipped. Overall, it’s a sophisticated evolution of the automakers’ previous EV interiors, more stylish than straightforward.

Dual wireless charging pads on the center console are positioned beneath a 14.0-inch touchscreen running a Toyota-made user interface. Ditto the 12.3-inch driver’s display, larger than in any of the brands’ previous EVs. Both vehicles offer air vents, USB ports, and overhead lights for all three rows.

The main difference is that the Getaway can be optioned with leather upholstery, while every Highlander uses synthetic material. Furthermore, the Getaway has power-folding third-row seats as standard; those are optional on the Highlander.

As with all Subarus (and Toyotas), the Getaway comes with numerous driver assist and active safety features such as automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane change assist, and adaptive cruise control.
