To Tesla’s credit, the 2025 Model Y and Cybertruck earned a five-star overall safety score, the highest possible, but here we focus on EVs that earn 2025 Top Safety Pick+ or 2025 Top Safety Pick status from IIHS and include National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data when available. These are the safest all-electric options to consider.

2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E Safety Ratings and Features

Ford’s controversial electric crossover achieves IIHS Top Safety Pick+ status for 2025, along with a five-star overall score from NHTSA.

Standard driver assist and active safety features on the 2025 Mustang Mach-E include front automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beams. The Mach-E can also be equipped with Ford’s BlueCruise 1.5, which allows for hands-free driving on a network of premapped roadways across the United States and Canada.

Most EVs are quick, but the Mustang Mach-E is actually fun to drive, too. The RWD model isn’t particularly powerful but handles well, the dual-motor GT is plenty sporty for an everyday SUV, and the new Rally version is an absolute blast in the dirt. Range and charging stats for the Mach-E aren’t exceptional, but at least Ford has access to Tesla’s Supercharger network now. With its large storage capacity and useful driver assist tech, the Mach-E makes for a practical and enjoyable everyday electric SUV—even if it might not be a “real” Mustang.

The electric version of Genesis’ excellent compact luxury crossovercomes equipped with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, road sign recognition, and automatic high-beams. Emergency evasive steering assist is added on higher-end models.

2025 Genesis GV70 Electric Pros and Cons

The Genesis GV70 Electric is supremely luxurious and lovely to drive—too bad about its short driving range. It provides abundant comfort and enjoyable performance within the roughly 200 miles it can cover on a charge, but that range just isn’t sufficient for a modern electric SUV, especially at this price point. At least it can recharge very quickly. Aside from a slightly grabby brake pedal, we have no complaints about the GV70 Electric’s dynamics. Rather, we heap praise on its strong acceleration, smooth ride, and composed handling. The GV70 Electric is a great way to get around town, but it’s not so excellent for EV road tripping.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Safety Ratings and Features

In IIHS evaluations, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 once again earns Top Safety Pick+ status for 2025. NHTSA has completed partial testing, deeming five-star scores in side crash and rollover protection; the sporty Ioniq 5 N is excluded from these results.

Driver assist and active safety features on the 2025 Ioniq 5 include front automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, side cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beams. High-end models get blind-spot view cameras. An upgrade for the 2025 Ioniq 5 is steering wheel hands-on detection for the lane keep assist, an improvement from the torque sensor used previously.

What might be the best electric SUV is now even better for 2025—it’s coming for the Tesla Model Y (which is notably absent from this list) thanks to its built-in NACS charging port. With that, it can plug right in at Tesla Supercharger stations. As the 2025 Ioniq 5 also gets a revised center console, it’s even more practical and user-friendly than before. Now that the lineup includes the rugged Ioniq 5 XRT and thrilling Ioniq 5 N, this award-winning electric crossover remains a top choice.

Just like it did in 2024, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 scores IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and an NHTSA five-star overall safety score for 2025.

Blind-spot view cameras, intersection collision avoidance, and automated lane change assistance are added on higher-end trims.

Based on the same fundamentals as the Ioniq 5, the Ioniq 6 also enjoys good driving range and impressive charging capabilities. Still, this sedan isn’t as successful as its crossover counterpart—it’s not as good-looking or spacious, and its cabin isn’t arranged as intuitively and uses lower-quality materials. It drives in a similarly enjoyable way, though, and its assist features are very useful. Even so, waiting until 2026 to get an Ioniq 6 is probably the right move, as it’s likely to gain a NACS port and high-performance N version that year.

Kia’s three-row EV SUV will keep the family safe with its IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and five-star overall score from NHTSA.

With its futuristic exterior, high-tech cabin, and enjoyable driving manners, the Kia EV9 has serious appeal for family drivers thinking about going electric. Its third-row seat isn’t especially spacious, but certainly enough for kids, and the seats ahead are spacious enough for adults. Based on the E-GMP platform like the excellent Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Ioniq 6, the EV9 boasts impressive range and charging capabilities—but avoid Tesla Superchargers for now, until the EV9 gains a native NACS port and the high-performance EV9 GT model arrives in 2026.

Although the Rivian R1S improves from IIHS Top Safety Pick status in 2024 to Top Safety Pick+ in 2025, it remains untested by NHTSA.

In its 2025 refresh, the R1S gained the Rivian Autonomy Platform, a system of software and hardware that enables advanced self-driving potential. Even as Rivian works to roll out more autonomous driving features, standard driver assist and active safety tech includes automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and more. The 2025 R1S’ has automatic adaptive beam technology that won’t shine the headlights directly into oncoming traffic. That feature isn’t live yet but will become activated in the future via over-the-air update.

2025 Rivian R1S Pros and Cons

With masterful on-road dynamics and serious off-road capability, the Rivian R1S is a deeply impressive and enjoyable SUV. Its cabin is beautifully designed and appointed, especially considering this is a first-effort vehicle from Rivian. That said, more physical controls would greatly improve ease of use, and the third-row seat isn’t very spacious. Although the 2025 R1S looks much the same as before, under-the-skin updates added this year make a huge difference to the vehicle’s computing potential and ability to improve software over time. Thanks to this, the 2025 R1S will eventually offer driver assist features that’ll make it even safer than it is now. Rivian’s walk-off home run continues to sail out of the park.

This list covers EVs that have earned a 2024 Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). If rated, they receive a five-star overall safety score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). From small SUVs to midsize sedans and even a truck, here are the safest electric vehicles for 2024.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 – Safety Ratings and Features

For the second year running, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric sedan earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+ status, the highest possible designation. It achieves that even with IIHS’ second-best Acceptable score given for protection in the updated moderate front overlap test and headlight performance. The Ioniq 6 has not yet been assessed by NHTSA.

Every 2024 Ioniq 6 comes equipped with automatic high-beams, front automatic emergency braking, rear and side cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Higher-end versions gain an enhanced adaptive cruise control system with automated lane changes, camera-based blind-spot monitoring, and intersection collision avoidance.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 – Pros and Cons

Watch out, Tesla Model 3? One of few electric sedans from a mainstream automaker, the Ioniq 6 offers rapid charging and impressively long driving range. Its exterior design is a bit unconventional, but that shape lets it cut through the air efficiently and silently. Thanks to the long wheelbase, there’s more space in the cabin than might be expected. Although the interior is stylish and high-tech, material quality feels cheap in places. Swift acceleration and accurate handling add enjoyment to the drive; ride quality is comfortable aside from sharp impacts over potholes. Instead of the Ioniq 6, we prefer the Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossover for its more premium materials and better versatility. This SUV performs well, but not as well as its sedan sibling, in IIHS testing.

2024 Genesis G80 Electric – Safety Ratings and Features

Good scores in all crashworthiness tests catapult the 2024 Genesis G80 Electric to IIHS Top Safety Pick+ status. The EV hasn’t been rated by NHTSA, although the standard gas-powered G80 gets the highest five-star overall safety score.

Even in the new entry-level trim introduced for 2024, the G80 Electric comes equipped with many driver assist and active safety features. Among these are front and rear automatic emergency braking, rear and side cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Choose the Prestige trim to add camera-based blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and a driver monitoring system.

2024 Genesis G80 Electric – Pros and Cons

As it does away with the standard G80’s gritty combustion engines, the Electric version may be the most appealing model in the range. Smooth and quiet motors benefit the luxury experience, while delivering impressive torque and acceleration. Long driving range makes road trips viable, but the G80 Electric’s maximum recharge rate is only good, not great. Elegant exterior styling gives way to a cabin swathed in luxurious materials and crafted with a sense for sustainability. The fact that it wasn’t designed from the ground up as an EV, instead based on the same platform as the gas G80, results in compromises. Powertrain components infringe on trunk space and raise the seating position, leaving less headroom for tall drivers. For those of more average height, however, the G80 Electric is a compelling EV luxury sedan.

2024 Genesis GV60 – Safety Ratings and Features

In IIHS testing, the 2024 Genesis GV60 received a single Acceptable score in LATCH ease of use. Otherwise, it gets the top Good score in all crashworthiness, headlight, and driver assist tech tests—the GV60 clearly deserves its Top Safety Pick+ designation. The crossover hasn’t been tested by NHTSA.

2024 Genesis GV60 – Pros and Cons

Endearing oddness pervades in the Genesis GV60. Just look at it—there are funky design flourishes all over the body. That’s before you enter the cabin, which features unusual yet functional details such as a sliding glove box drawer. However, material quality isn’t as excellent as in other Genesis models. Fortunately, the GV60 is quite nice to drive, although its range suffers for the strong torque on tap. At least it has the same impressive charging capabilities as its corporate counterparts, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6—which might be the better EVs to buy, all things considered. On its own, however, the GV60 combines eccentricities and practicality to succeed as a nice everyday electric luxury SUV.

2024 Tesla Model Y – Safety Ratings and Features

In crash safety performance, the 2024 Tesla Model Y scores exceptionally well: It earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+ status and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

Like all new Tesla vehicles, the Model Y has the Autopilot suite of driver assist tech. These features include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and front automatic emergency braking. Semi-autonomous parking and lane changes are added by choosing the Enhanced Autopilot option. A level above that is the so-called Full Self Driving Beta feature, which doesn’t live up to its name.

2024 Tesla Model Y – Pros and Cons

Ubiquity makes the Model Y an uninteresting sight on the road, but how the electric crossover drives is far from boring. Even with its basic dual-motor powertrain, the Model Y is very quick and has sharp, accurate steering responses. The available Performance version makes things even more exciting. Ride quality is rather stiff, however. Driving range for the Model Y is good, and charging is easier than in other EVs thanks to Tesla’s expansive, reliable Supercharger network. The austere interior design buries too many functions within the large central touchscreen, but at least that touchscreen works well. Practicality is also high thanks to the spacious frunk and cargo area, but size up to the Model X for a viable three-row electric SUV.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 – Safety Ratings and Features

Although the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, the 2024 Ioniq 5 receives only Top Safety Pick status despite the vehicles’ close similarity—why? It’s because IIHS hasn’t subjected the Ioniq 5 to its new, more stringent updated moderate front overlap test, for which a Good or Acceptable score is needed for the esteemed +. At least the Ioniq 5 gets a Good score in the original moderate front overlap test, as it does in all other crashworthiness tests. Consider the Ioniq 5’s five-star overall NHTSA safety rating from 2023 for an idea of how the 2024 model might do.

All 2024 Ioniq 5 models come with front automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, side cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beams. 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 – Pros and Cons

Our 2023 SUV of the Year continues to be a great choice among EVs. It’s a versatile and agreeable everyday crossover: stylish, spacious, high-tech, enjoyable to drive, and the one-pedal driving setting has excellent calibration. Ride quality is mostly comfortable but can feel jittery over choppy pavement. We haven’t found the Ioniq 5’s driving range predictions to be accurate, often not going as far as it says it will, especially at highway speeds. Fortunately, it recharges rapidly at public fast charging stations, and Hyundai’s useful driver assist features make long-distance cruising easy. One annoying detail is that most Ioniq 5 models don’t have a rear windshield wiper—a vagary remedied by the Ioniq 5 N, which also promises thrilling performance.

2024 Lexus RZ – Safety Ratings and Features

Since the Lexus RZ wasn’t subjected to IIHS’ updated moderate front overlap crash test, it isn’t eligible for 2024 Top Safety Pick+ status. However, top Good scores in all other crashworthiness tests helped it receive a Top Safety Pick designation. The electric Lexus crossover hasn’t been tested by NHTSA.

All 2024 RZ models include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, and lane keep assist among standard driver assist and active safety features.

2024 Lexus RZ – Pros and Cons

The first all-electric Lexus model succeeds as a luxurious SUV but fails as a competitive EV. The RZ has distinctive looks that won’t be confused for a combustion-powered vehicle, but the cabin is classic Lexus: quiet, high-quality, attractively trimmed, and comfortable. Tech features are only fine, however. For some reason there’s no glove compartment, although the center console has some useful storage spaces. The RZ drives rather nicely, with quick acceleration and nimble handling. But this Lexus falters when it comes to important EV attributes, namely range and charging—it struggles to travel 200 miles on a charge and recharges slowly. The RZ could be a good local runabout in a two-car garage but can’t be taken seriously as a standalone transportation solution.

2024 Subaru Solterra – Safety Ratings and Features

Despite being essentially the same vehicle, the Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X receive different IIHS safety ratings. The Solterra earns 2024 Top Safety Pick status, while the bZ4X gets no accolade. That’s because IIHS only awards vehicles that have headlights rated Acceptable or Good as standard, and the headlights equipped on the base bZ4X XLE trim get the lowest Poor score. Even though the higher-end bZ4X Limited has headlights that get a Good score, the Solterra has Good-rated headlights across its lineup. Fortunately, both get Good scores in all crashworthiness tests and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

All 2024 Solterra models come with Subaru’s EyeSight suite of driver assist features. Among these are front automatic emergency braking, front and rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. For 2024, the Solterra gains a traffic jam assist system that allows hands-free driving in one lane at speeds up to 25 mph and an automated lane change feature.

2024 Subaru Solterra – Pros and Cons

Short range and slow charging seriously limit the Solterra’s viability as an everyday electric SUV. That said, drivers who can use a different vehicle for long-distance drives might consider the Solterra for around-town use only. Subaru’s first EV is generally pleasant to drive, offering a comfortable ride and composed handling. The experience would be better if the Solterra had an actual one-pedal driving mode. The interior is roomy and stylish but suffers similar ergonomic foibles to its counterpart, the Toyota bZ4X. Standard dual-motor AWD and generous ground clearance support Subaru’s all-terrain reputation—just make sure whatever trails you might explore are close to home or have charging nearby.

2024 Audi Q4 E-Tron – Safety Ratings and Features

Both the 2024 Q4 E-Tron and sleek Q4 Sportback E-Tron earn IIHS Top Safety Pick status this year. Both get the top Good score in all crashworthiness tests in which they were evaluated; they haven’t been rated in the updated moderate overlap front test. NHTSA gives a five-star overall safety rating to dual-motor AWD-equipped versions of the Q4 E-Tron and Q4 Sportback E-Tron, but the base single-motor RWD powertrain version has not been fully assessed and thus doesn’t have an overall safety rating.

For 2024, Audi made adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist standard equipment. All Q4 models also include front automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and automatic high-beams.

2024 Audi Q4 E-Tron – Pros and Cons

The Q4 E-Tron is one of the safest EVs on the market—otherwise, it’s not a compelling luxury SUV. Fundamentally related to the Volkswagen ID4, the Q4 doesn’t substantially improve on that vehicle’s performance or creature comforts, calling into question why it might be worth the extra outlay. Interior finishing appears better in the Audi, but it takes sitting inside the Q4 to realize the amount of chintzy plastic and unfinished details lining the place. Nor does the Q4’s unsettled ride support a luxury claim, although like the ID4 it has an impressively tight turning radius. There are other EVs we’d recommend over the Q4 E-Tron, such as the Genesis GV60 or Tesla Model Y.

2024 Audi Q8 E-Tron – Safety Ratings and Features

Neither the Audi Q8 E-Tron nor the Q8 Sportback E-Tron has been rated in the updated moderate overlap front crash test, precluding these vehicles from a Top Safety Pick+ award. Regardless, Good scores in all other crash categories helped the vehicles achieve Top Safety Pick status. Both versions get a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

Every 2024 Q8 E-Tron comes with adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, front automatic emergency braking, rear and side cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic high-beams.

2024 Audi Q8 E-Tron – Pros and Cons

If you want an EV but also don’t want an EV, the Audi Q8 E-Tron could be the EV for you. Audi specifically engineered it to feel like a combustion-powered SUV, dulling its motor responses and forgoing a one-pedal drive mode. The reasoning is that loyal Audi customers apprehensive of going electric won’t be too befuddled by these enjoyable EV attributes. Meanwhile, Tesla went all-in on those characteristics well over a decade ago, and it hasn’t exactly struggled for sales. Compared to Tesla SUVs, however, the Q8 E-Tron has an interior that’s more stylish and high-quality. And even with the aforementioned vagaries, the Q8 E-Tron drives in a luxurious and authoritative way. Still, it’s difficult to not think the Q8 E-Tron was designed for obsolescence—merely a placeholder leading up to fully fledged Audi EVs such as the 2025 Q6 E-Tron.

2024 Rivian R1S and R1T – Safety Ratings and Features

Rivian’s R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck earn identical IIHS safety scores for 2024. Both are deemed a Top Safety Pick, although that’s a downgrade from the Top Safety Pick+ status they earned last year. The reason is that neither has undergone IIHS’ more challenging updated moderate front overlap test, in which an Acceptable or Good rating is required to get 2024 Top Safety Pick+ designation. The good news is that the R1S and R1T still get the highest Good score in all the other crash tests they’ve been subjected to. NHTSA has completed only a partial evaluation on the 2024 Rivian R1S, giving it a four-star score in rollover protection, a common result for SUVs of any type.

All 2024 Rivian SUVs and trucks come equipped with the automaker’s Driver+ suite, which combines adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high-beams, rear cross-traffic alert, and front automatic emergency braking.

2024 Rivian R1S and R1T – Pros and Cons

The R1S has a third-row seat where the R1T has a truck bed, but both Rivian vehicles have something in common: being absolutely fantastic. Commendable driving range and fast charging eases their road (or off-road) trip ability, especially now that they can plug in on Tesla’s Supercharger network. It doesn’t matter if they’re equipped with two or four motors—they are supremely powerful and enjoyable to drive. Luxurious design and materials line their cabins, although user-friendliness would be improved by more real buttons, instead of hiding most controls within the large touchscreen. Practicality is strong in both vehicles; the R1T offers work-ready capability between its truck bed and gear tunnel, but those aren’t suitable replacements for the seven-passenger capacity found in the R1S—just choose the best one for your needs and enjoy.
