The greatest unknown in the car shopping process is reliability. When we put vehicles through our testing regimen here at MotorTrend, we evaluate aspects of ownership such as performance and the real-world range of EVs. And while our long-term fleet captures a snapshot of what buyers can expect from their first year of ownership, durability is a metric that can only be quantified over time.

That’s why we refer to the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, which assesses dependability as problems per 100 vehicles after three years of ownership. The following 2022-model-year SUVs buck trends as dependability gets worse across the industry, with a 6 percent increase in problems per 100 vehicles compared to last year’s study. Keep reading to find out the most reliable SUVs, plus pricing, safety, powertrain, and fuel economy stats for each model.

2022 Toyota RAV4: Most Reliable SUVs

For hundreds of thousands of Americans, the Toyota RAV4 is the default choice for everyday transportation. It’s easy to see why, with the compact SUV’s chiseled design, strong fuel economy, and solid safety scores. Impressive reliability makes the 2022 Toyota RAV4 an obvious recommendation for used car shoppers. The current-generation RAV4 has been on sale since the 2019 model year, so figure that new examples at dealerships share the same great reliability. Our praise of the RAV4 comes with some caveats, however. The gas-only model’s four-cylinder engine is unrefined, and ride quality could be better across the entire RAV4 range. Driver engagement takes a backseat to efficiency and safety.

2022 Toyota RAV4: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $18,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine, 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline four-cylinder engine with two electric motors
  • Fuel Economy: 25-41/32-38 mpg city/highway

2022 GMC Terrain: Most Reliable SUVs

The handsome and rugged-looking 2022 GMC Terrain is also one of the most reliable SUVs out there on the used car market. A responsive chassis, a quiet cabin, and a decisive nine-speed automatic transmission make for pleasant daily drivability. Those looking for more off-road utility should spring for the AT4 trim. Standard wireless smartphone mirroring is a plus, but we aren’t fond of the Terrain’s finicky push-button gear selector or its lackluster acceleration. GMC just redesigned its entry-level SUV for 2025, so the prior-generation model’s dependability may not be reflective of the latest Terrain.

2022 GMC Terrain: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $16,000
  • Safety Rating: Five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 1.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine
  • Fuel Economy: 25/28-30 mpg city/highway

2022 Mazda CX-5: Most Reliable SUVs

With styling that’s aged incredibly well and fantastic driving dynamics, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 is an attractive SUV for those who want a sporty all-arounder. Its available turbocharged engine is particularly desirable for its commendable output. Safety ratings are excellent. For all its charm, the Mazda CX-5 gives up cargo space to rivals, and its fuel economy trails other models in the compact SUV segment.

2022 Mazda CX-5: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $19,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick+ (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine, 2.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine
  • Fuel Economy: 22-24/27-30 mpg city/highway

2022 Chevrolet Tahoe: Most Reliable SUVs

Offered with a range of responsive powertrains, the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe is a benchmark amongst full-size SUVs. It also happens to be one of the most reliable SUVs on the market. Its distinctive exterior design stands out from rivals, and the spacious interior is ideal for hauling people or cargo. Downsides include a trucklike ride, an outdated cabin with bland materials, and middling safety ratings.

2022 Chevrolet Tahoe: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $34,000
  • Safety Rating: Four-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 5.3-liter naturally aspirated V-8 engine, 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8 engine, 3.0-liter turbodiesel I-6
  • Fuel Economy: 14-21/19-28 mpg city/highway

2022 Nissan Murano: Most Reliable SUVs

If you love the trappings of luxury but hate a flashy badge, the 2022 Nissan Murano might surprise you with what it has to offer. The hushed cabin houses comfortable seats, taking the aches and pains out of daily commuting or road-tripping. Linear brake feel makes the Murano easy to operate around town and on the highway. Some might find the Murano too soft, however, with ponderous handling and abundant body roll. Its interior is dated, although Nissan’s leathers are soft and high quality.

2022 Nissan Murano: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $17,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick+ (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 3.5-liter V-6 engine
  • Fuel Economy: 20/28 mpg city/highway

2022 Chevrolet Blazer: Most Reliable SUVs

Available with a duo of powerful engine options, the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer positions itself as a sportier midsize SUV. Driving pleasure can be had with either powertrain, and RS models are particularly enjoyable to wheel on a curvy road. While the Blazer looks cool on the outside, its half-baked interior is a total letdown. Mediocre cargo volume takes away some utility. At least the Blazer is a very dependable SUV.

2022 Chevrolet Blazer: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $19,000
  • Safety Rating: Five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, 3.6-liter V-6 engine
  • Fuel Economy: 19-22/26-29 mpg city/highway

2022 Toyota Venza: Most Reliable SUVs

The midsize Toyota Venza has a plush and upscale cabin wrapped in attractive if anonymous exterior styling. Standard with a hybrid powertrain, the 2022 Toyota Venza is as efficient as it is reliable. A plentiful suite of driver aids ease the burden of commuting and long-distance stints. Unfortunately, interior capacity is limited, and the Venza is noisy at speed. High-end trims have annoying capacitive controls. While the Venza isn’t perfect, this is a comfortable and enjoyable car from Toyota.

2022 Toyota Venza: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $24,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline four-cylinder engine and two electric motors
  • Fuel Economy: 40/37 mpg city/highway

2022 Nissan Kicks: Most Reliable SUVs

Essentially a hatchback with a high ceiling and a little extra ground clearance, the 2022 Nissan Kicks is a good fit for city-dwellers who need a subcompact runabout. The Kicks is well equipped and provides a comfortable ride. Acceleration is poor, however, and the noisy engine becomes a nuisance during longer stints behind the wheel. All-wheel drive is not available. Shoppers looking for a reliable SUV with a lower barrier to entry should consider a Nissan Kicks.

2022 Nissan Kicks: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $11,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick (IIHS), four-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine
  • Fuel Economy: 23-26/30-32 mpg city/highway

2022 Subaru Crosstrek: Most Reliable SUVs

A subcompact SUV with solid off-road capability, the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is an excellent choice for shoppers in the market for a reliable SUV. While the base engine lacks power, the available 2.5-liter flat-four supplies plenty of grunt for daily use. Compliant suspension tuning provides a comfortable ride while controlling body roll. Reassuring safety scores and useful tech contribute to the Crosstrek’s desirability. Tech isn’t quite as good at lower trims, however, and the rarer manual models aren’t as efficient as examples with the CVT.

2022 Subaru Crosstrek: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $20,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 2.0-liter flat-four engine, 2.5-liter flat-four engine
  • Fuel Economy: 22-28/29-33 mpg city/highway

2022 GMC Acadia: Most Reliable SUVs

Offered with a powerful V-6 engine, the 2022 GMC Acadia is a known quantity when it comes to the most reliable SUVs. Handsome exterior styling and a strong suite of active safety tech make this model a sensible choice for SUV shoppers. Some won’t appreciate the lackluster interior materials and will want more interior volume. On-road handling is decent, and the Acadia can tackle some light off-roading.

2022 GMC Acadia: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $21,000
  • Safety Rating: Five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, 3.6-liter V-6
  • Fuel Economy: 19-22/26-29 mpg city/highway

2022 Mazda CX-9: Most Reliable SUVs

Although the Mazda CX-9 has been discontinued in favor of the automaker’s new flagship SUV, the CX-90, the prior three-row hauler is one of the most reliable SUVs you can buy on the used market. Great handling, an upscale interior with premium features, and strong safety ratings make this a stellar choice for a daily driver. Third-row legroom is tight, however, and compromised cargo volume limits utility when the rear seats are in place. Still, we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a 2022 Mazda CX-9 to anyone in search of a three-row SUV that offers a little more panache than its more sedate competitors.

2022 Mazda CX-9: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $20,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick+ (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 2.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine
  • Fuel Economy: 20/26 mpg city/highway

2022 Buick Encore GX: Most Reliable SUVs

Buick’s subcompact SUV has good interior packaging and a quick infotainment system. While the 2022 Encore GX has upscale styling, its unimpressive interior materials hold it back from being a genuine luxury vehicle. The same goes for its unrefined ride and powertrain options. At least Encore GX owners and shoppers can take solace in their SUV’s reliability.

2022 Buick Encore GX: Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $14,000
  • Safety Rating: Top safety Pick (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 1.3-liter turbocharged inline three-cylinder engine
  • Fuel Economy: 26-29/29-32 mpg city/highway

Most Reliable SUVs From 2024

Choosing the right SUV is about more than just style, performance, or fuel economy; it’s about investing wisely to minimize the financial drain of repairs. At MotorTrend, we assess various facets of car ownership, from acceleration and braking times to the real-world range of EVs. With a new car, even one that joins our fleet for a year, long-term dependabilty remains an aspect of vehicle ownership that’s impossible to deduce.

In recommending the most reliable SUVs, we turn to the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, which measures dependability as problems per 100 vehicles after three years of ownership. Additionally, this list integrates insight into the overall value of these vehicles related to five-year ownership costs, courtesy of our colleagues at IntelliChoice. Without further ado, these are the most reliable SUVs from mainstream brands.

2021 Chevrolet Trax – Most Reliable SUVs

It’s not the most exciting SUV, but the Chevrolet Trax is a reliable pick in its segment. It boasts a cleverly laid-out interior, decent fuel economy, and easy maneuverability. Weaknesses include slow acceleration, cheap-feeling cabin materials, and mediocre tech and driver assist feature availability. Models equipped with front-wheel drive receive a long-term value rating of Good from IntelliChoice, while all-wheel-drive versions of the Chevrolet Trax are merely Average.

2021 Chevrolet Trax – Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $12,000
  • Safety Rating: five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 1.4-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine
  • Fuel Economy: 23-26/30-32 mpg city/highway

2021 Toyota C-HR – Most Reliable SUVs

The Toyota C-HR was the automaker’s entry-level subcompact SUV until it was discontinued after the 2022 model year. We liked that the C-HR bundled generous standard feature content and composed handling in a cool-looking package. Those charms notwithstanding, the C-HR’s overstressed engine delivered abysmal acceleration. We also criticized its cramped cabin and poor cargo space. A decent suite of tech and impressive safety scores made Toyota’s subcompact SUV a more attractive pick, but the C-HR’s long-term value is Poor for most trims and Mediocre at the top-level Limited grade.

2021 Toyota C-HR – Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $18,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick (IIHS), four- or five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrain: 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline four-cylinder engine
  • Fuel Economy: 27/31 mpg city/highway

2021 Chevrolet Equinox – Most Reliable SUVs

We appreciate the Chevrolet Equinox for its easy-to-use infotainment system, as well as its generously sized rear seat and cargo area. Fuel economy is decent, too. Although it’s one of the most reliable SUVs, the Equinox has disappointed us with sloppy road manners, inferior cabin materials, and lazy transmission tuning. Fortunately, long-term value is Average or better according to IntelliChoice. The basic L trim receives a score of Excellent with front-wheel drive. All other 2021 Equinox models range from Average to Good depending on trim and drive layout.

2021 Chevrolet Equinox – Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $14,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrain: 1.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine
  • Fuel Economy: 25-26/30-31 mpg city/highway

2021 Toyota RAV4 – Most Reliable SUVs

A compact SUV staple, the Toyota RAV4 continues to reinforce its manufacturer’s reputation for reliability. The RAV4 gets a lot right with strong fuel economy, generous standard safety tech, and a sharp design that has held up well over the years. Hybrid models are quicker, smoother, and more efficient than gas models. The RAV4’s weaknesses include a coarse gasoline powertrain, a stiff ride, and lackluster handling. IntelliChoice rates the RAV4’s long-term value anywhere from Mediocre to Good, except RAV4 Prime PHEV models, which are rated Excellent.

2021 Toyota RAV4 – Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $18,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline four-cylinder engine, 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline four-cylinder engine with two electric motors
  • Fuel Economy: 25-41/32-38 mpg city/highway

2021 Toyota Venza – Most Reliable SUVs

Though the Toyota Venza doesn’t enjoy the same household name recognition as some of its stablemates on this list, the midsize hybrid SUV has a lot going for it. A sleek exterior is matched with a comfortable, well-made, and luxurious interior. We also appreciate the Venza’s impressive fuel economy, decent performance, and strong suite of active safety tech. Although Toyota positions the Venza as a midsize SUV, it actually has less cargo volume than a compact RAV4. Other quirks include frustrating touch-sensitive controls in higher trims, and excessive tire noise. Venza LE and XLE trims are deemed Good long-term values by IntelliChoice, while the top-level Limited model is considered to be an Excellent value.

2021 Toyota Venza – Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $24,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrain: 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline four-cylinder engine and two electric motors
  • Fuel Economy: 40/37 mpg city/highway

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee – Most Reliable SUVs

Jeep equips the midsize Grand Cherokee with a range of powerful naturally aspirated engines. Attractive styling is complemented by poised off-road dynamics and impressive off-road capability. Grand Cherokee L models add a third row for up to seven passengers. Not quite luxurious, the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s interior isn’t as big as other midsize rivals. Most trims receive Good or Excellent ratings from IntelliChoice for long-term value.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee – Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $20,000
  • Safety Rating: four- or five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V-6 engine, 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V-8 engine, 6.4-liter naturally aspirated V-8, 6.2-liter supercharged V-8
  • Fuel Economy: 11-19/17-26 mpg city/highway

2021 Toyota 4Runner – Most Reliable SUVs

The off-road-ready Toyota 4Runner isn’t just a fan favorite for its capability; its durability and reliability are time-tested, too. A strong value when new, the 4Runner comes with lots of infotainment and active safety technology. Just don’t expect Toyota’s midsize, body-on-frame SUV to be great for on-road driving. Poor fuel economy, a clumsy transmission, and unrefined dynamics make it an underwhelming choice for daily use. Although it’s a reliable SUV, IntelliChoice posts mixed results on the 4Runner’s long-term value, with scores ranging from Poor to Good depending on trim level and drive layout.

2021 Toyota 4Runner – Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $25,000
  • Safety Rating: four-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V-6 engine
  • Fuel Economy: 16/19 mpg city/highway

2021 Chevrolet Traverse – Most Reliable SUVs

Boasting a strong V-6 engine and accurate steering, the Chevrolet Traverse is quick and offers decent handling. As a larger, three-row SUV, there’s plenty of space for people and cargo. However, the interior feels cheap. Additionally, active safety tech is lacking on lower-end models. Most trims receive Poor or Mediocre long-term value ratings from IntelliChoice. Only the basic L trim with front-wheel drive receives an Average rating.

2021 Chevrolet Traverse – Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $20,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrain: 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V-6
  • Fuel Economy: 17-18/25-27 mpg city/highway

2021 Toyota Highlander – Most Reliable SUVs

The three-row Toyota Highlander slots above the midsize Venza and below the full-size Sequoia in the automaker’s lineup. In addition to being one of the most reliable SUVs, the Toyota Highlander boasts ample cargo capacity, strong safety scores, and an efficient hybrid variant. It’s generally a solid family hauler, but the third row is cramped for most adults. A floaty, bouncy ride is less than ideal for those enthusiastic about how a vehicle handles. Long-term value is Excellent for all trims aside from the Platinum model with all-wheel drive, which is rated Good by IntelliChoice.

2021 Toyota Highlander – Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $22,000
  • Safety Rating: Top Safety Pick+ (IIHS), five-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V-6 engine, 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine and two electric motors
  • Fuel Economy: 20-36/27-35 mpg city/highway

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe – Most Reliable SUVs

Offered with a range of responsive powertrains, the Chevrolet Tahoe is the quintessential American SUV. Wearing a muscular exterior design, the Tahoe hauls passengers and cargo with style and swagger. Its spacious interior ensures there’s enough room for everyone. Models equipped with GM’s Magnetic Ride Control system are especially well-controlled and comfortable. Those who want an SUV that drives like a car with a higher ride height won’t like the Tahoe’s trucklike handling, however. Additionally, the interior design leaves a lot to be desired. Safety scores are decent, but the 2021 Tahoe’s long-term value is lackluster, with scores ranging from Poor to Mediocre according to IntelliChoice.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe – Most Reliable SUVs

  • Approximate Price: from $36,000
  • Safety Rating: four-star overall rating (NHTSA)
  • Powertrains: 5.3-liter naturally aspirated V-8 engine, 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8 engine, 3.0-liter turbodiesel I-6
  • Fuel Economy: 13-21/19-28 mpg city/highway
