The government has confirmed that Justice Priscilla Chigumba, the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), was involved in an accident.
Justice Chigumba’s top-of-the-range Toyota Landcruiser crashed yesterday along the Harare-Chirundu Road. Pictures circulating on social media showed the wreckage of her gold-coloured SUV moved from the road after the crash.

Following the accident, speculations went rife as people questioned if Justice Chigumba survived the accident.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana, confirmed on his X account:
“Yesterday, [Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC)] Chairperson, Justice Chigumba, was involved in an accident on her way from Chinhoyi when a haulage tanker crashed into three vehicles, including hers. There were no fatalities from the accident, and Justice Chigumba was not injured.”
Witnesses Reveal How The Crash Happened
People who witnessed the accident shot videos of the scene. A fuel tanker had swerved off the road and halted awkwardly into a nearby bush. Another vehicle overturned and was lying on its roof.
The person filming the video gave a different view from what Nick Mangwana tweeted online. The eyewitness alleged that the driver of the Toyota Landcruiser caused the accident. Justice Chugumba was in the SUV. It is unclear if she was the one on the steering wheel or if she had a driver.
